How to Automatically Import Substack Subscribers Into Convert Kit (Video)
A free tool I made. Works with every email marketing service.
Substack is perfect for sending newsletters. But it doesn’t allow you to:
create advanced segments,
send broadcasts to all readers (or segments) without publishing an article,
send automated sequences.
You can send emails to certain groups of subscribers. But it’s not as convenient as in any email marketing service like ConvertKit.
But broadcasts and automations turn your newsletter into a real online business.
You can for example use an automated sequence to onboard new subscribers, send a free email course, or sell something. And you can use broadcasts for book launches or announcements. Most successful writerpreneurs do this.
Unfortunately, Substack doesn’t provide an API or any native integration with email marketing tools. So, there’s no easy way to automatically add new subscribers.
Fortunately, I am an automation nerd! 😉 I created a scenario in Make.com that adds your Substack subscribers to ConvertKit as soon as they subscribe.
It’s nothing unethical. They already gave you permission to email them. And every email must include the unsubscribe link. If you want to be 200% sure, you can just send an automatic email in ConvertKit that notifies them they’ve been added, explains them why, and gives them the chance to unsubscribe.
Here’s how to create the automation by yourself:
The video above shows how to set up the automation by yourself. It uses a couple regular expressions. Here they are:
Subscribe branch
Email:\s*(?<email>[a-zA-Z0-9._%+-]+@[a-zA-Z0-9.-]+\.[a-zA-Z]{2,})[\s\S]*?\n\n(?<name>[A-Z][a-zA-Z]*(?:\s[A-Z][a-zA-Z]*)?)
Unsubscribe branch
\*Email:\*\s*([a-zA-Z0-9._%+-]+@[a-zA-Z0-9.-]+\.[a-zA-Z]{2,})
But, if you want to save the time, you can just download the blueprint and import it into your Make.com account. It’s available below for paid subscribers.
If you're a ConvertKit, Mailchimp, or any other email list service user, this is an awesome gift from, Alberto. It's very generous of you, Alberto! 🙏🏼
